Just got back from my first appointment and could not be happier with the care I received. I've been to four dentists in 5 years and Dr. Markus is heads and tails above anyone else I've been to. The appointment was on time. He has an impeccable chair side manner and friendly demeanor and fully explained everything he found following the exam. His office staff was friendly and efficient and the hygienist, Carlos, gets an A++. It was, without a doubt, the most comfortable cleaning I've had and was quite thorough.
Unlike most other dentists, there was no hard sell on the tooth whitening, night guard, invisalign...you name it. Best of all, with every other dentist I've been to, I had to make at least two visits, one for the check up and then come back again for the routine cleaning. Not here. One visit and I was done.
This dental practice is hands-down the best I've been to in SF. I can't recommend it highly enough.

This is the longest period of time I've ever stayed with my dentist, a whopping three years. Dr. Watson changed all my old filings to clear ones, invisible braces to straighten minor movements from when I had braces as a child because I somehow lost my retainer. The office staff (Gida, you're the greatest!) is professional, courteous, and friendly. I definitely plan to keep him around!

I have never had a better experience at the dentist. I wish I could go more often than every 6 months!

Dr. Markus is the best -- and like most people, I used to dread going to the dentist. I even like getting my teeth cleaned now, because I like Carlos. I am now a total devotee of dental care, and even wear the nightguard on occassion because I don't want to disappoint. My only constructive criticism: it rules that you give me an ipod to listen to while you work on my teeth, but its stinky that there's no jovi lined up ready to rock me. Other than that, this place is incredible.

I love Dr. Watson and the crew at South Beach Dental. I've been with them for a year and he re-did my root canal and some fillings. The crown was giving me some issues, so he kept making appointments with me until he was sure everything would be ok (multiple appointments due to the fact that each crown had to be made) I don't think I've ever been to the dentist so much, but I'm glad that he made sure it fit perfectly.
When I called to complain about my wisdom tooth, they referred me to Dr. Ehsan to get them removed. It was a great call. South Beach took care of all the detailsand paperwork for me and they even emailed my ex rays to Dr. Ehsan, saving me time and money. I just had to show up.
I think I subconsciously loathe going to the dentist, so I was showing up late. If Dr. Watson was annoyed by this he didn't show it. Now that I've gotten to know him, I show up on time, early even!

Dr. Watson is a terrific dentist and human being. He also is honest and never tries to sell you extras just because you have insurance. Carlos, the hygenist, is very nice and gives great advice on taking care of your teeth. Both he and Dr. Watson make you feel at home and at ease. Plus, the women in the front office are very friendly and fun.

doing this whole adult thing means no parents to 'remind' you to go to the dentist. no one to force you into that office for the bi-annual cavity check.
what's a gal to do other than find the best dentist that isn't mean and scary? and that's just what I did (thank you yelp).
everything people have said here is true. yes, dr. watson is super nice and honest. yes, they play hip hop and R&B in the chairs. yes, the chairs have massagers. yes, they take blue cross and delta dental.
might I also add that Carlos gives the best teeth cleanings on the planet?

My but I'm a fickle dental gal. I mean, I like my old dentist and I like his office. But they don't take my insurance and they're just a mite bit far for a mid-day stroll.
Enter South Beach dental. Way close to my house. Takes my insurance. And so nice! PLUS (now this is super cool) the exam chairs massage! or at least mine did. and they gave me an ipod to listen to and sunglasses for the bright light. Take that Pacific Dental SPA (NOT my old dentist but the last one I cheated on my old dentist with. Oh, I know, too much info). Just saying.

Dr. Watson is the best dentist on the planet, hands down. He is also one of the nicest people I ever met and will totally put you at ease even if you are scared of the dentist.
Even my 7 year old daughter is in love with him.

I've been going to Dr. Watson for a couple months now and I have to admit that he has completely redefined what I consider the dentist's office to be. Not only is he amazingly nice, he takes his time, and is completely honest. He's got a very good chair-side manner and will not make you feel like you're a terrible, terrible person for not taking great care of your teeth. (That thing you did with those kittens and honey, however, does make you a terrible, terrible person.)
The staff is very nice. I cannot express this enough. I went in today to get my permanent crown put in, and even though I was excited to go home and have some extra time off because I bounced early from work, I stuck around to talk for more than a few minutes.
Why? The answer is that Yira is THE NICEST PERSON ON EARTH. (*EDIT: ONE of the nicest - between her, Ashika and Lindsay, this place is batting a thousand!) Yira has gone out of her way on multiple occasions to get me information about my insurance. And since I'm retarded when it comes to things that involve text smaller than that 1.5" high lined stuff I used to write on in preschool, I need someone to patiently hold my hand. Everyone at Dr. Watson's office, including Dr. Watson himself, have helped me to figure out what was best for me (and my short stack of Benjamins) without ever pressuring me. I have this theory that smiling is part of the job description.
Oh, and I love that the staff photos on the website all look like glam shots. BONUS!

i finally sucked it up and found a dentist in san francisco after going way too long without a teeth cleaning. my decision was based on a couple of friend's recommendations (who go to UCSF, as do I) for a dentist that was covered under our insurance plan, and the yelp reviews that i found online.
Sadly, i had a few too many cavities, some of them quite deep (yuck). Dr. Watson, who did my teeth cleaning himself, patiently went over the work that would have to be done. during my appointments, Dr. Watson was great about making sure I wasn't feeling any sensitivity while he was working on my teeth. after two appointments and a fair bit of dental work, i can say i'm very happy with the work he did on my teeth. they look great and i haven't felt any long lasting pain after the procedures. i'll definitely recommend dr. watson to other people looking for a dentist. and of course the ipod and eyeglasses are great - a nice way to drown out what is going on around you....

Dr. Watson is great!!! His entire staff is also amazing, from the dental hygienists to the front desk clerk. The decor of the office lobby is totally cheesy Miami-style, but who cares what the waiting room looks like as long as it's clean and comfortable. As soon as I sat down in the chair to have my teeth cleaned, I was given an i-pod and headphones... great diverse selection... I can't remember if I listened to AC/DC or Tom Petty, either way there was a selection for every person and every mood.
I just got my reminder postcard to come back in for a cleaning, and I'm actually kinda excited!
Thanks to the other Yelpers who recommended Dr. Watson... undeniably a five star dentist!

I had a really great experience here today. After a bad time at another dental office, I chose this one because of the great Yelp reviews, and I wasn't disappointed!
As other reviewers have mentioned, Carlos, the dental hygenist, was super friendly and considerate, did a really thorough job, and caused zero pain in my mouth. (I love the water-pik thinger as opposed to the metal instruments of pain!!) And he even took close-up, before-and-after pictures of my teeth to illustrate where I can be flossing better!Kind of gross, but also quite helpful.
Dr. Watson was also really nice, took his time reviewing my x-rays and prodding at my teeth, and didn't suggest *any* expensive treatments or optional cosmetic procedures (this is a first for me).
Although I did have to pay about $55 out of pocket (the portion of the exam and x-rays that was over my dental PPO's limit), I feel that it was well worth it for a professional, competent experience and peace of mind. I'll be back!!

this is the nicest experience i've ever had at the dentist. Carlos, my hygienist, was very considerate and kept checking to make sure there was no sensitivity during the cleaning. they provide sunglasses to protect you from the light and splatter from the water. the chair is a massage chair and they offer an IPOD during the cleaning. talk about luxury. Dr. Watson was also extremely friendly.
- Kitty H. - (10/16/2007)
The denist has come a long way since my childhood, when the only entertainment you got was a cheap poster stapled to the ceiling.
I have to confess: I have great teeth. I wish I had great abs instead, but no -- I only got the great teeth genes. But I've still had some crazy masochistic hygenists. Carlos is the best ever. They are really thoughtful (ie giving you the cheesy Kmart sunglasses so you don't get spitspray on your eyeballs) and give you iPods if you want.
The best part is that they pretty much have foregone the evil scrapper thingy and instead use some sonic-cleaner-majiggy. No pain, no evil yanking of the scapper out of your teeth crevices.
And Carlos said they're looking at getting eyeglasses with TVs in them so you can totally zone out during your cleaning. Stay tuned to see if they do!

Update:
For the first time in about a decade I had a cavity!!!! NOOOOOO! Dr. Watson had me numbed and the cavity filled in about 45 minutes flat. And that is with about 20 minutes of listening to Norah Jones on the provided iPod and breathing deeply in the massage chair to let the novocaine take effect. I was impressed. I even had time to wine shop at K&L and get a coffee before giving colleagues a chance to poke fun at my gimpy smile at work.
Original Review:
The dentist is a test you always fail. You can't even lie, because the evidence is right there under a very bright, examining light. How often do you floss? Really....because your bleeding gums say otherwise. You should be brushing in a CIRCULAR motion, not side to side like the striations on your gums show you are.
Dr. Watson and the hygienist still admonished me (at one point they even threatened gum disease!), but they did so in a much more enjoyable manner than any other dentist I have known. Perhaps that is because they are much younger...giving the impression of knowing all the new technology. They also seemed to know what I really wanted at the dentist before I did: an Ipod to ward off the drill sounds and sunglasses to dampen the glare. And to top it all off, my insurance covered everything. Five Stars.

I've been to two other dentists in the area over the past year and finally, I have found my new doctor!
The staff is friendly. They even have the new patient form on their web site so you don't have to worry about wasting time filling out during your first visit. They walked me through my insurance coverage and what was already spent during the year.
The hygienist, Carlos, is extremely thorough and really helpful. He pointed out what I could be doing better and where my problem areas were.
My exam with Dr. Watson was very quick and he got right to the point. He didn't make me wait a long time and he was very upfront about only doing dental work that was required to get the smile you want.
If you live in SF, I'd highly recommend Dr. Watson and his office

i love dr. watson! he was recommended to me by my mentor and close family friend, and i was very happy with his service. he cleaned my teeth himself while i jammed out to all my favorite jams on his ipod. he had everything from that dirty south hip-hop to smooth slow baby making music. his prices are fair, and he always tries to keep your cost at a minimum. i have two other dentists in the bay area, but find him to be the most affordable and thorough. will go back for 6mos cleaning.

I'm picky about my dental professional. I've never been disappointed by the service or procedures with Dr. Watson. I always leave happy and with a brighter, cleaner smile!

I went to see Dr. Watson upon the recommendation of an acquaintance after suffering through anxiety-ridden appointments at another dentist here in the city (who shall remain nameless). Thank you, Dr. Watson, for helping me overcome my dental anxiety! Carlos, who x-rayed and cleaned my teeth, has a very gentle touch and even warned me when he was going to rinse, a nice change from the periodic unannounced cold blasts of water I've experienced previously. He was very attentive and asked me repeatedly if I was doing okay. Both Carlos and Dr. Watson went to great pains to show me that I'm brushing my teeth too hard and how I could monitor any changes myself. They definitely didn't push any products or procedures like other dentists might. And, I really appreciated the fact that they did not berate me for failing to floss daily but just reminded me that I should try to do it every day. Thank you, Carlos and Dr. Watson, for not making me feel stupid for forgetting to floss! Making the appointment and the in-processing procedures were painless and easy. For once, I walked out of a dental appointment completely happy and carefree!
